De’VIA represents Deaf artists and perceptions based on Deaf experiences.
VSA Colorado is proud to host a show of internationally recognized artists who are on the forefront of this critically important art movement.
De’VIA features formal art elements with the intention of expressing the innate cultural or physical Deaf experience. These experiences may include metaphors, perspectives, and insight in relationship with the environment (both the natural world and Deaf cultural environment), spiritual and everyday life.
De’VIA may also be created by deafened or hearing artists, if the intention is to create work that is born of their Deaf experience. It is possible for Deaf artists not to work in the area of De’VIA.
The De’VIA movement began in 1989 at the Deaf Way Festival Conference at Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C., where a group of Deaf artists’ discussion led to the creation of De’VIA with its manifesto.
Join us in congratulating Nancy Rourke on the publishing of the book about her work: Nancy Rourke: Deaf Artist Series. Nancy will be in the gallery the night of the 24th signing copies of the book.
